This project was a four-person group project but everything in the portfolio was made by me. The physical model was made by me and another group member.
For this event, our task was to design a pavilion that could exhibits a range of different design talents’ work, as well as hosting workshops, lectures and activities related to Design and Architecture. Therefore we wanted to create a pavilion to be both flexible and beautiful, with a diversity in the way it could be used.
The shape of the “fold out, hang out” pavilion stems from the shape of a box, and from there has been adapted to fit its purpose and to accommodate the location where it is to be placed – Lilla Torg in Malmo. Its pattern, created by the vertically and horizontally ordered beams, is inspired by the Japanese tatami mats. These mats are laid down with a specific method to interconnect them with each other and, together, make up a harmonious, mathematically proportional form. The use of the pattern in this pavilion is a way to translate the logic of the system, but above all to produce a creative and playful, yet consistent and visually thoughtful appearance.
The pavilion is to be built with fir timber, as fir is strong and works well as a framework for construction. It will also be locally produced, environmentally friendly, and has a Scandinavian look and feel to it.
When the material and the beams from this pavilion have been used multiple times over several of the following festivals and events, the materials will be donated to the design students of Malmö University, to be used in their projects.
