Architecture and Visual Communication

This project focused on giving life to and around an abandoned factory called Värmevärket in Lund, Malmö. The surrounding area is also currently being developed, with lots of new residential housing and recreational places planned.

With a whole new community sprouting in this area I thought that an activity centre, along with a rich woodland-like planting, would be ideal in terms of bringing people together.

The core approach for this project where ”merging the old with the new”. This is achieved twofold, by not only reclaiming specific parts of the old factory but also, by crafting a space where older generations can mix with the young.

Starting with a dialogue centre, I aim to gather ideas from the community of activities to include, before opening a food market and a bar with its own in-house brewery. Following this a greenhouse will be built on the second floor, maximising daily sunlight.

DESIGN PROPOSAL

For who?
All the city’s residents who like spontaneous meetings, activities and an urban landscape. Meetings between generations, ethnicities and genders.

Purpose

The master plan for the area states: ”Mixing different types of housing, workplaces, culture and other societal functions through densification in one and the same area can create more viable public spaces, security and cohesion as well as strengthened opportunities for meetings.”

Why?

Create a new history, reputation, and identity based on history. Dealing with social problems. Increase social and ecological sustainability. Unite all groups in society.

What is added that is new?

Establishes the activity route between the Arena and the spring village swimming pool. Furthermore, a greenhouse with native species for relaxation and education.

Creates a landmark and a node, a place for both Lund residents and others to get to. As well as a more dense wooded area for recreation and playscapes.
